Digital Momentum Index
Top Direct Selling companies as ranked by social media and online presence
  • Q2 2022
Brought to you by Direct Selling Capital Advisors

Direct Selling News in partnership with Direct Selling Capital Advisors presents the Direct Selling News Digital Momentum Rankings semi-annual list. The purpose of these rankings continues to be to evaluate and acknowledge the companies experiencing significant growth in their online presence within the last six months.

The first half of 2022 is behind us. And with a lot going on in the world, the DSN Digital Momentum Index has seen a few shake-ups! As we shift to longer term fan base growth and continue to watch community engagement on social media, some social media accounts have overtaken those with larger fanbases as their community engagement grows and strengthens. While follower/fan growth is still more heavily weighted, engagement with the team members and customers on social media created a few rises and falls in the ranking this first half of 2022.

Regarding Facebook, the group averages for fan and engagement growth were 0.9 percent and 0.8 percent respectively, while Instagram fared better at +4.8 percent follower growth and +0.9 percent engagement growth.

Overall, on social media the first half 2022 was all about keeping existing fans/followers and focusing on engaging through meaningful posts and communications to broader audiences. The index of companies overall saw little change in SEO metrics, with a moderate decline (-10.4 percent) in overall traffic to official sites.

  • Q1 2022
Brought to you by Direct Selling Capital Advisors

With Q1 of 2022 now in the rearview mirror, the key story is that the web traffic and social media progress lagged somewhat across the full Direct Selling Momentum list. Web traffic for the quarter was flat as was fan and follower growth across Facebook and Instagram, respectively.

More positive news is that engagement across both platforms for the list appears to be improving, with Facebook seeing a large 14 percent increase, and Instagram accounts experiencing a much more modest three percent. User engagement is a calculated as a moving seven-day average to smooth out day-specific engagement volatility and is a measure of total daily engagement, rather than engagement per post.

Metric Calculation, growth totals and averages are ranked on a quarterly basis, smoothing out periodic volatility. For follower and fan count, this means comparing the counts at the end of a quarter to those of the prior quarter. For engagement metrics, we measure the average for the quarter.

This methodology benefits companies focused on consistent, regular postings and continuous fan/follow engagement. Similarly, we calculate the average web traffic throughout the month. While admittedly there is some seasonality in direct selling, the rankings are relative, and so companies capitalizing the best of good quarters or successfully retaining the most during slower quarters will find themselves on top.

  • Q4 2021
Brought to you by Direct Selling Capital Advisors

With the end of the year came a continued winding down of web traffic, as traffic across all (domestic and international) direct selling companies in the momentum index closed Q4 down 9 percent vs. Q3. Of interesting note, the greatest impact to the website component of the Momentum Index was Domain Authority, with the average for all 130 Momentum Index companies being -40 percent. Domain Authority is an indirect measure of a website’s likelihood to appear in online searches.

Regarding Social Media, both Facebook and Instagram saw growth across the dataset, with averages being 2 percent and 10 percent respectively. Engagement across both platforms was flat-to-down, with averages around -4 percent. This is unsurprising given the holiday season, as engagement is measured as a seven-day average. Overall, the accumulation of more followers and fans throughout the holidays shows modest growth to Q3, which boasted a 20 percent increase in Instagram followers across the company set.

    2021 High-Level Summary

Overall, web traffic for 2021 declined as most direct selling companies saw distributor and recruiting interest over the year return to a more pre-COVID volume. On social media, however, the industry made great gains over the last 12 months as companies saw some returns from earlier investments in social media attention and marketing. For 2021, the industry saw fan/follower growth of 66 percent and 86 percent for Facebook and Instagram respectively. As of December, The Direct Selling Digital Momentum Index represents 98 Million Facebook Fans and 23 Million Instagram Followers! The December 31, 2021 Year-End Momentum Rankings are:

  • Q3 2021
Brought to you by Direct Selling Capital Advisors

Compared to Q2, Q3 saw fan bases grow both social platforms, while general website traffic slowed somewhat. Most impressive of the metrics was the industry’s continued growth on Instagram, where companies new and old alike posted significant growth in followers and engagement continues to improve. Average Web Traffic of the 100+ companies slowed significantly this quarter, erasing the surge from Q2 with a decline of roughly 30 percent.

Regarding Social Media, the group averages for Facebook fan growth and engagement were +8.9 percent and -3.0 percent, respectively, while Instagram participation boasted impressive 22.8 percent follower growth and engagement per post remained unchanged. Overall, Q3 highlights a continued shift to Instagram for most companies in the list as consumers move to the faster-paced platform with more digestible snippets of information.

Metric Calculation and growth totals and averages are ranked on a quarterly basis, smoothing out periodic volatility. For follower and fan count, this means comparing the counts at the end of a quarter to those of the prior quarter. For engagement metrics, we measure the average for the quarter. • Q2 2021
Brought to you by Direct Selling Capital Advisors

Comparing Q2 to Q1, the industry overall saw modest growth in Instagram followers and engagement while the same stats for Facebook experienced a slight decline, not altogether unexpected. The 100+ portfolio of Direct Selling companies also saw an impressive web traffic quarter-over-quarter improvement of +20 percent.

Regarding Facebook, the group averages for fan growth and engagement were 0.7 percent and -7.5 percent respectively, while Instagram fared better at +3.7 percent follower growth and +3.0 percent engagement per post. Overall, Q2 was a modest improvement from Q1, assumingly due to the general reopening of the economy and social engagements though somewhat depressed as we entered the summer months. We expect some decent uptick in activity as we exit summer and the kids return to school, allowing distributors more time and energy for increased activity.

It is worth noting that in the new format, totals and averages are ranked on a quarterly basis, smoothing out some of the previous volatility the index was experiencing. For follower and fan count, this simply means comparing the counts at the end of Q2 to those at the end of Q1. For engagement metrics, we measure the average for the whole quarter, a shift benefits from consistent, regular postings and continuous fan/follow engagement. Similarly, we calculate the average web traffic throughout the month. While admittedly there is some seasonality in direct selling, the rankings are relative, and so companies either capitalizing the best on good quarters to retaining the most during slower quarters will find themselves on top.

The Digital Momentum Index comes with some exciting updates! Overall, the last four weeks have seen a cooling off for the full company list as the industry enjoyed a flurry of social media attention in the previous period. For this reason, companies ranked highly this month by just preserving the fans and activity they had. The full 100-company list saw minimal changes in fans or followers and engagement across both platforms decreased somewhat. However, web traffic across the industry stayed steady and managed to post an average of 4 percent growth.

Internationally, the top 25 outperformed the domestic 100, posting moderate follower growth and some big wins with fan engagement on both platforms. Engagement for International brands on both Instagram and Facebook saw 18 percent and 14 percent gains, respectively.

We’re finally shifting to longer term growth!
A recurring point of feedback since the inception of the Momentum Index is the fickle nature of measuring month over month growth in a vacuum. This month’s list, like all others, compares only a 4-week timeline to the previous 4-week’s performance—meaning companies who performed very well in the prior period are “punished” with low to negative performance this period. This will be the final issue of the monthly Momentum Index, and we will be shifting quarterly publications with longer timelines that measure more consistent, long term growth in social media and web analytics. We’ll continue tracking performance for all companies as always and focus on quarterly rankings lists we hope will more accurately represent those companies in the industry continuously excelling in the Social Media space

PROGRAM DISCLAIMERS

What the Ranking Means
It is worth repeating that the Digital Momentum Index only compares single period/monthly changes (vs. year-to-date or a trailing month timeline), and so it is not uncommon to see a single-member company make leaps or appear/disappear each month. A company that achieved +25 percent growth last month would have to continue growth atop that to maintain their rank. The index is intended to be a measure of “who saw significant social media growth in the last 30 days” rather than a long-time leaderboard.

Our Efforts for Continuous Improvement & Accuracy
The amount of data available on Social Media and SOE / Web Traffic is both vast and ever-changing, and we’re learning more about it every month. We launched the Rankings in Q4 2020 with the intent to learn and collect feedback for a stable method in 2021, and we continue to learn and collect feedback. February rankings were calculated with the same data and weighting as January 2021 and December 2020, and we will make and announce any adjustments to the methodology quarterly.

Components
The list represents months of analysis across the three core pillars of social media marketing: web traffic & SEO analysis, Facebook activity, and Instagram activity.

Eligibility
A company is included in the Transformation Capital Direct Selling Momentum ranking when it has an active website, at least one active social media account, and at least 50,000 followers or fans for a single account (Facebook or Instagram).

As noted, our initial ranking methodology focuses exclusively on three primary drivers of online presence: web traffic, Facebook activity, and Instagram activity. We’ve aggregated roughly a dozen metrics from these three sources and assessed their change over the last thirty days in an attempt to measure the growth in a company’s online audience or momentum.

A brief explanation of our proprietary methodology follows:

Web Traffic & SEO
We analyze basic web traffic statistics as a measure of general interest. These statistics seek to measure the number of individuals searching for, visiting, and clicking on links that direct them to the company’s domain. This domain includes the corporate website and (in most cases) the company hosted web pages for individual distributors. Additionally, we analyze the number of third-party sources referring to internet users to the company website, as well as the number of associated keywords, branded phrases, or marketing jargon (hashtags, slogans, etc.) that are popular across the web. Assessing the change in these metrics over time creates an estimated increase or decrease in demand for the company across the web.

Facebook Activity
We gather a collection of metrics intended to measure thirty-day changes in both volume (count) and quality (engagement & communication with) of followers. Assessing the change in behavior on Facebook, we believe, is a valuable tool in determining improvements (or declines) of a brand’s social value.

Instagram Activity
As with Facebook, we focus on the thirty-day change of our metrics as a measure of social attention, or momentum, assuming a significant change in attention indicates changes in social interest and brand awareness.

A Note on Facebook vs. Instagram
Given varying target markets and consumer profiles, companies seem to often focus on Facebook or Instagram, rather than both. To ensure appropriate credit is given to the correct outlet, our metric analysis and momentum calculation consider which platform appears to be the primary for each company. As an example, if a company has 20,000 Instagram followers and 80,000 Facebook fans, all Facebook-related metrics will be weighted at 80% (80/100) of the total weighted social media metric score. Similarly, all Instagram-related metrics will be weighted 20%. Few companies do not have an active official Instagram account, and so their social media metric is based 100% on Facebook performance and changes. There are no companies in the list for which an official Facebook profile does not exist. Additionally, we are unable to track metrics specific to lead distributor accounts, as data from private accounts is not made accessible by Facebook or Instagram.
